DJ Mitchell Wins MVP on the Strength of 104 Points and 4 Player-of-the-Game Honors

Marcus Reed··

The MVP award in this division did not go to a player on the championship roster. It went to DJ Mitchell, and the numbers explain why without much argument needed.

Mitchell averaged 26.0 points across 4 games, totaling 104 points and 24 threes for the tournament. His team did not reach the final, but no individual player in the field scored more.

Two games defined the run. Against the Atlanta Timberwolves, Mitchell posted 31 points on 7 threes and took Player of the Game. Against the Marietta Tropics White, he matched that recognition with 30 points and 8 threes, the single-game three-point high of his tournament. Those two performances alone account for more than half his total points, and both came with POG recognition attached. A 24-point, 6-three outing against the Griffin Grasshoppers added a third straight POG and kept the scoring floor exactly where it had been all week.

The case for Mitchell is straightforward. He ranked 1st in scoring across the entire field. He led his own team in points every game. He earned Player of the Game in 4 consecutive outings, meaning coaches on the opposing sideline kept arriving at the same conclusion the tournament committee eventually did.

MVP awards typically follow championship runs. Mitchell's did not. His team exited before the final, which makes the individual recognition more specific rather than less. Four games, 4 POGs, the tournament scoring lead, and 24 threes represent the best individual run in the division regardless of where the bracket ended. The award reflects exactly that.
